A terrific opening has become available for a mid-weight Deputy Editor to work on a Retail Lifestyle title at a custom publisher in Cape Town. We are looking for a hands-on, proactive, solutions-orientated person with editorial flair and excellent communication skills. The role will see you reporting to the Editor and helping to lead the Creative and Production teams to produce this monthly magazine.

  

Responsibilities

  • Client relationship
  • Commissioning freelancers
  • Editing and sub-editing content
  • Production management
  • Budget control and administration
  • Ensuring each issue is produced within deadline
  • Contribution towards editorial ideas and content development
  • Ensuring the copy is topical, relevant and of a high standard
  • Implementation of client changes
  • Ensuring each page meets client and reader objectives and needs in both copy and elements
  • Working on special projects and supplements
  • No errors to client or print
  • All copy fact-checked and grammatically correct
  • All copy aligned to style and tone of magazine
  • Queries picked up and attended to
  • All copy consistent, with no repetitions or contradictions
  • Custodian of magazine style guide and responsible for keeping it up to date and comprehensive
  • Implement client changes that best serve the magazine and also meet the client objective
  • Checking consistency and accuracy of straps, credits, page numbers, competition elements
  • Writing of captions, headlines and intros when needed
  • Fresh ideas at booklist meetings
  • Develop relationships with content suppliers, i.e. book suppliers, PR companies, online sources
  • Commission features when required
  • Write quality copy when required
  • Keep abreast of current trends in the market.
  • Support the team to produce high-quality work to brief and to standard required, on time and within budget
  • Understand client objectives
  • Provide creative solutions to clients and challenges and requested changes
  • Adhere to the stipulated working hours
  • Handle client communications with professionalism, efficiency and friendliness
  • Manage production schedule and adhere to strict deadlines
  • Develop an understanding of the client’s needs and views through changes requested
  • Efficient and focused use of time
  • Stick to deadlines and flag concerns
  • Develop supplier relationships
  • Liaise with printers
  • Efficient use/understanding of editorial budget available
  • Capture appropriate spend/budget recons timeously, as required
  • Identify and flag any budget concerns
  • Assist with ad-hoc administration 

 

 

Requirements
The successful candidate must have/be:

  • Strong editorial skills
  • At least three years’ experience in the magazine publishing industry is a necessity
  • A keen eye for detail
  • Highly organised, personable and proficient liaison
  • Excellent editorial, organisational and communication skills
